FIRE crews from Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey and Chagford were among 12 stations called on to battle a recycling and landfill site blaze at Alphington today, Friday.

At around 10am Fire Control sent eight fire appliances to deal with the fire measuring 20 metres by 30 metres involving low hazard domestic metal waste.

A Fire Control spokesperson said equipment used during the incident was: two 45 mm jets, three hose reel jets, two compressed air foam jets, four sets of breathing apparatus, three thermal image cameras and on site machinery.

‘The water was delivered to the incident ground by street hydrant and water bowser.

‘The fire is now out and crews are monitoring the waste pile for hotspots.

‘The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental,’ reported fire control shortly after 5pm.
