The North Platte Police Department released details Friday morning about a fire that engulfed Vieyra's Metal Works late Thursday.

In a news release, Police Chief Steve Reeves said a man spotted by officers inside the building hasn't been located.

The state fire marshal's agency is investigating.

Reeves said officers initially responded to reports of gunshots near the building at Rodeo Road and Carr Avenue just before 11 p.m.

Officers located an individual inside Vieyra’s Metal Works, near an open overhead garage door, and a small fire inside the building.

When officers ordered the man to exit, he refused and retreated into the building, Reeves said.

The North Platte Fire Department was dispatched and officers secured the building after receiving information that a large amount of fireworks were housed inside.

By 11:50 p.m., the building was fully engulfed in flames.
