Residents near the Hoopa and Willow Creek areas are experiencing hazardous air quality due to the Six Rivers Lightning Complex fires. According to the air quality maps from the Purple Air website the Burnt Ranch area is being the most impacted by the smoke.

[Screenshot from the purpleair.com website]As of 2:23 p.m. on August 11th, the Burnt Ranch area was experiencing an air quality index (AQI) of 551. An AQI of 300 or above, constitutes a “[h]ealth warning of emergency conditions: everyone is more likely to be affected with 24 hours of exposure.”

The Willow Creek, Peterson and the area just south of Hoopa are also experiencing heavy smoke exposure.
The EPA says that exposure to fine particulates from wildfire can cause numerous health issues:
People with heart or lung diseases, children, and older adults are the most likely to be affected by particle pollution exposure.
It is recommended that you evacuate areas of heavy smoke due to the health risks of prolonged exposure. If you are unable or unwilling to evacuate, there are some measures the EPA recommends residents take to improve the air quality inside their homes.

We buy the 20×25 in 1500 level 3M HEPA filters in the off season and then duct tape them to a box fan, seal the house and run that to clean the inside air. Does a fast and great job and seeing how fast that filter turns black and picturing all that in your lungs is frightening.
From experience, once you get a N95 mask wet priming pumps or shooting water you can’t breath through it so take extra care. Hanging it in front of the fan and filter mentioned above dries it in a few hours.
