Aug. 31—Heavy downpours hit Schuylkill County on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in a car being stuck in floodwaters.
County Emergency Management Director John Matz said the rain seemed to come through southwest to northeast, with a southern band coming from Pine Grove northeast toward West Penn Twp.
He said 1 to 2 1/2 inches fell, with more expected.
A northern track of rain was coming from Hegins Twp. toward Shenandoah and McAdoo.
At the Mount Carbon arch, flooding trapped Michael Johnson and his daughter Tanya in their car.
They were rescued by Capt. Richard Misstishin and Steven Evans, both of American Hose Company in Pottsville.
Company members, along with Yorkville Hose Company, responded to the scene at 3:12 p.m.
A dive team from Schuylkill Haven was also called but it was later canceled, Pottsville Fire Chief James Misstishin said.
The older Johnson said that he was under the arch following another car when the floodwaters "just rushed in," taking them by surprise.
The two were driving back home from Penn State Schuylkill, where Tanya Johnson is a freshman, when they got stuck.
"It was crazy," he said while stranding at the side of the road.
The father and daughter were the only ones in the car and were uninjured.
Firefighters later pushed the vehicle out of the water.
State police also responded to the scene, along with fire police, who diverted traffic away from the flooded area.
Matz said the arch was the only spot where there was flooding.
"Nothing else significant," he said.
However, the Schuylkill County communications center received numerous calls about trees and wires down throughout the county, as well as a power outage in Porter Twp.
There were also minor crashes reported in Pottsville, on Interstate 81 and one serious one in West Penn Twp.
PPL's online outage tracker indicated that 34 customers were without power around Donaldson.
Isaac Longley, a meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, said there were clusters of rain and thunderstorms in the county Tuesday afternoon, with another round of heavy rain and storms expected in the evening from the southwest.
Those later storms were predicted to produce wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
"It could get pretty windy," he said.
The National Weather Service warned that isolated and severe thunderstorms could produce pockets of wind damage, with heavy rainfall also possible.
Longley said the "fast-moving" system was expected to clear out by 7 or 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Wednesday is expected to bring mostly sunny weather with low humidity and temperatures in the low 80s.
"It's a chance to dry out," Longley said.
